Lucia di Lammermoor is a dramma tragico (tragic opera) in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian-language libretto loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. Donizetti wrote Lucia di Lammermoor in 1835, a time when several factors led to the height of his reputation as a composer of opera.
Lucia di Lammermoor is a great opera -- Donizetti's best opera (equaled -- but not surpassed -- only by the finest bel canto operas of Bellini). And Beverly Sills performance of Lucia is definitive -- the finest yet recorded. Sills gives a superb performance, combining the vocal skills of Sutherland with the dramatic intensity of Callas. The rest of the cast is outstanding as is Schippers.
